From the first ultrasound when they received the diagnosis that the baby had Down syndrome, María and Carlos told the doctors they did NOT want to abort. However, at each subsequent visit, they were asked to do so again. "For us, who were clear that we weren't going to abort, each visit meant that pressure, a couple who had doubts... they give in to that pressure," says Carlos López Chaves, María's husband and father of Azahara and Bruno. "We didn't find anyone who said 'cheer up' until María was referred to pediatrics before Azahara was born. We found a pediatric cardiologist who was the first to call our daughter 'baby.' Until then, they had only referred to her as a fetus. It was the first time we felt our daughter was ours." This lucky dad has started a mission on social media to help other parents who have received the news that their baby has Down syndrome. He has experienced it firsthand and knows how difficult it is to receive the diagnosis, how hard the pressure to abort, but above all how BEAUTIFUL it is to live day to day with his daughter, celebrating every milestone in her development, every smile, and every lesson she teaches him.
