But when the harm inflicted by the polytheists reached its peak, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated from Mecca to Medina, and Islam gained strength, God permitted the Muslims to fight because of the injustice and aggression they suffered. God Almighty is capable of granting them victory and humiliating their enemy. (40) Those who were forced to leave their homes for no other reason than their conversion to Islam and their declaration, “Our Lord is God alone.” Were it not for God’s ordained law of repelling injustice and falsehood through fighting, truth would have been defeated in every nation, the earth would have been devastated, and places of worship—monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques where Muslims pray and frequently invoke God’s name—would have been destroyed. Whoever strives to support God’s religion, God will surely grant him victory over his enemy. Indeed, God is All-Powerful, unassailable, and All-Mighty. He has subdued all creation and holds them in His grasp. (41) Those whom We have promised victory are those who, if We establish them in the land and make them successors therein by granting them dominion over their enemies, establish prayer by performing it at its appointed times and according to its prescribed limits, and give the obligatory charity (Zakat) from their wealth to those entitled to it, and enjoin all that God has commanded regarding His rights and the rights of His servants, and forbid all that God and His Messenger have forbidden. To God alone belongs the final outcome of all matters, and the ultimate reward belongs to the righteous. (42) And if your people deny you, O Messenger, then the people of Noah, 'Ad, Thamud, the people of Abraham, the people of Lot, and the people of Midian who denied Shu'ayb, and Pharaoh and his people who denied Moses, all preceded them in denying their messengers. Yet I did not hasten to punish these nations, but rather gave them respite, then I seized each of them with punishment. So how severe was My rebuke to them for their disbelief and denial, and for exchanging the blessings they had for torment and destruction?
