A Million People Fell Asleep Between 1917 and 1930. Some Never Woke Up.
Between 1917 and 1930, roughly a million people around the world fell asleep in a way doctors had never seen before. Some never woke up again for decades. A few of them, near the end of the 1960s, woke up completely, just for one strange season, before drifting back into that same sleep in front of the people who loved them. This is the story of encephalitis lethargica, sometimes called the sleeping sickness epidemic, and of Oliver Sacks, the young doctor who found a ward full of forgotten survivors in the Bronx more than forty years after it all began. It's a real, documented story, and more than a century later medicine still can't fully explain what caused it. Told slowly and gently, the way this channel always tells its stories, so it's perfect for winding down and falling asleep to. If this is your first time here, welcome. Settle in, get comfortable, and dim the lights if you haven't already. Let this run as long as you need it to, there's no rush and nothing here requires you to stay awake for it. If the channel helps you sleep, a like and a subscribe genuinely help it grow, and I'd love to know in the comments where in the world you're listening from tonight.
