The Siege That Saved Constantinople (717–718 AD)
On August fifteenth, seven seventeen AD, according to both Byzantine and Arab chroniclers, one thousand eight hundred warships carrying over one hundred thousand warriors surrounded a single city. By August fifteenth, seven eighteen—exactly one year later—the Byzantine chronicler Theophanes claimed only five ships made it home. Modern historians consider this figure hyperbolic, but all sources agree: historical records document one of history's most catastrophic military disasters, and the survival of a civilization that should have been extinct.
