We're taking a break from our Japan tour project and will be showing you some videos from our collection. This is Trial Onsenkyo Toranoyu in Kokonoe Town, Oita Prefecture. Kokonoe Town is dotted with hot springs called Kokonoe Kuyu, and Chojabaru Onsen is one of them. Chojabaru Onsen is located along the Yamanami Highway that connects Oita Prefecture and Kumamoto Prefecture, and is a popular driving spot with its open views of the mountains and plateaus, including Mount Kuju. It can be reached from not only Oita Prefecture, but also Kumamoto Prefecture and Fukuoka Prefecture in less than two hours, and on the day we visited, cars with Kyushu license plates were parked all over the place. I think this is the first time I've been to Kokonoe Kuyu since I stayed at Kokonoe Yuyutei in Sujiyu Onsen, which is famous for its mascot dog Angel-kun. Toranoyu is a resort facility run by Trial, a nationwide discount store, which established the Chojabaru Onsen Trial Onsenkyo in 2011 and operates the resort facility Kuoritei and the lodging facility Toranoyu, a lodging facility specializing in bed and breakfast only. I had been interested in Toranoyu for a while, so I decided to stay there. Unfortunately, it was raining on the day we visited. Toranoyu has two types of accommodation: a row house and a cottage, and Makobe stayed in the row house type. The maisonette rooms are spacious and comfortable, even in the row house type. Above all, the sounds of the surrounding trees rustling in the wind and the chirping of the birds are soothing. The hot springs have a large public bath and five family baths, which can be used as many times as you like as long as they are available. They were all popular and it was difficult to find a vacancy, but we managed to visit all the family baths. For dinner and breakfast, we went to a nearby restaurant attached to the facility. It takes about five minutes on foot one way. The view from the restaurant was great, and the food was delicious. If you wish, you can have a bento box delivered to your room. Please note that there are no amenities such as towels or toothbrushes, so it is recommended that you bring your own. They are also sold at the shop in the facility. Also, since the accommodation building is made of a lot of wood, open flames are strictly prohibited. Drinks from the vending machines in the facility are sold for 100 yen, so it is also true that the facility is run by a discount store. Apart from bringing your own amenities, you can enter the hot springs as much as you like, and it is amazing that you can stay here so cheaply with such quality, and it seems that you can stay even cheaper if you bring your own food. Unfortunately, we were unable to observe the night sky due to the rain, so it was an inn that I would like to visit again next time.
