Starfleet was not always charged with the defence and protection of United Federation Space. Originally it was simply the exploratory arm of the United Earth in the Enterprise era but we were introduced to the Military Assault Command Operations, also known as MACO which acted as the human marines and worked alongside Starfleet on the Enterprise.
