Directed by John Lee Hancock, Saving Mr. Banks is a 2013 biographical drama exploring the complex development of the Disney classic Mary Poppins. The plot stars Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers, the prickly author who travels to Hollywood in 1961 to meet Walt Disney (Tom Hanks). Disney has spent twenty years courting Travers for the film rights, but the uncompromising writer fears his musical, animated vision will dismantle the integrity of her beloved characters. The narrative uses emotional flashbacks to Travers' childhood in Australia, revealing her bond with her self-destructive father, Travers Goff (Colin Farrell). These memories show how he inspired the character of Mr. Banks and why she is so protective of the story. As she clashes with Disney’s creative team—including the Sherman Brothers—Travers struggles to reconcile her painful past with the studio's upbeat vision, famously demanding the film include no red. Featuring standout performances and a score by Thomas Newman, the movie offers a behind-the-scenes look at a famous cinematic collaboration. While it balances wit with themes of grief and reconciliation, it also highlights the friction between the author and the mogul. From the catchy melodies to the emotional premiere, the story explores how art is used to process loss.
