It was not a sole project of H&K; it was developed jointly with Dynamite Nobel and Zeiss (Hensoldt), with assistance from the West German government. Development began in the late 1960s and was completed around 1990. After completion, it was adopted as official West German equipment, but with the end of the Cold War, the plan was scrapped. Europe moved toward disarmament, and with the reunification of East and West Germany, there was no room for mass production of the G11. It ended unfortunate. Because it uses caseless ammunition, it was extremely difficult and time-consuming to put into practical use. Its internal structure is very complex, and mass production would likely be costly. Since it hasn't actually been used, its true value is unknown as to whether it's actually usable on the battlefield.
