It has evolved over the centuries and encompasses the cultural diversity of several social groups of Bangladesh. The Bengal Renaissance of the 19th and early 20th centuries, noted Bengali writers, saints, authors, scientists, researchers, thinkers, music composers, painters, and film-makers have played a significant role in the development of Bengali culture. The Bengal Renaissance contained the seeds of a nascent political Indian nationalism and was the precursor in many ways to modern Indian artistic and cultural expression. The culture of Bangladesh is composite and over the centuries has assimilated influences of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity. It is manifested in various forms, including music, dance, and drama; art and craft; folklore and folktale; languages and literature; philosophy and religion; festivals and celebrations; as well as in a distinct cuisine and culinary tradition. Folk theatre of Bangladesh The term Folk theatre encompasses all forms of theatre which originated in the geographical region of Bangladesh. Unlike the Sanskrit theatre, the folk theatre was always in direct contact with the people and was often created and supported by them. However, it was not closed to the refined techniques of the Sanskrit theatre. In the folk theatre, the performers include actors, dancers, singers, musicians, and puppeteers (both male and female). Their performance is not restricted to dialogue in prose but is comprehensive and wide-ranging. It includes any one or more of the following elements: (i) dance, (ii) instrumental music and (iii) speech rendered in prose, verse or lyric, either in the form of narration or that of dialogue. The folk theatre of Bangladesh has developed in distinct forms, which can be loosely categorised into (i) the Narrative, (ii) the Song-and-Dance, (iii) the Processional, and (iv) the Supra-personae. যাত্রা ভারতীয় রাজ্য পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ও বাংলাদেশের একটি জনপ্রিয় লোকনাট্য ধারা। এগুলি প্রধানত চারঘণ্টাব্যাপী বিপুল আয়োজনের বিনোদন। উচ্চ শব্দ ও চড়া আলোর ব্যবহার এবং দৈত্যাকার মঞ্চে নাটকীয় উপস্থাপনা যাত্রার বৈশিষ্ট্য। অতিনাটকীয় ভাবভঙ্গি ও আবৃত্তির মাধ্যমে প্রায়ই যাত্রার উপস্থাপনা করা হয়ে থাকে। সম্প্রতি যাত্রার উন্নতিকল্পে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার কলকাতার বাগবাজারে স্থাপন করেছেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গ যাত্রা আকাদেমি ও ফণিভূষণ বিদ্যাবিনোদ যাত্রামঞ্চ। বাংলাদেশী মঞ্চনাটক খ্রিস্টীয় ৪র্থ শতাব্দীতে সংস্কৃত নাটক থেকে উৎপত্তি লাভ করেছে। গুপ্ত বংশ কর্তৃক বঙ্গ বিজয়ের মধ্য দিয়ে প্রাচীন বাংলা সংস্কৃতিতে উত্তর ভারতীয় সংস্কৃতির অনুপ্রবেশ ঘটে এবং নাট্যচর্চার প্রসার ঘটে। পরবর্তীতে আদি বাংলা পল্লী সংস্কৃতির সাথে মিশে গিয়ে বাংলা মঞ্চনাটকে নিজস্ব ধারা সৃষ্টি হয়। বর্তমানে সংস্কৃত মঞ্চনাটক ছাড়াও বাংলা মঞ্চনাটকে ইউরোপীয় মঞ্চনাটক ও পল্লী মঞ্চনাটকের প্রভাব বিদ্যমান। পল্লী মঞ্চনাটক বলতে বাংলাদেশের ভৌগোলিক সীমার মধ্যে সৃষ্ট সকল ধরনের মঞ্চনাটককে বোঝায়। পল্লী মঞ্চনাটক সরাসরি স্থানীয় মানুষদের দ্বারা প্রয়োজনের তাগিদে সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। তবে এটা সংস্কৃত নাটকের মৌলিক কাঠামো পুরোপুরি অনুসরণ করেনি। লোকজ মঞ্চনাটকে, কলাকুশলীসহ অভিনেতা, নৃত্যশিল্পী, গায়ক, সঙ্গীতজ্ঞ, এবং পুতুল (পুরুষ ও মহিলা উভয়) অন্তর্ভুক্ত। এখানে পরিবেশনা কেবল সংলাপ
