Salop Goods Junction

It’s July 2024 and Salop Goods Junction at Crewe is having its last check over on the mechanical locking of the lever frame as come Christmas the Signalbox and two others would be resignalled to the Manchester Rail Operating Centre , ended no a hundred plus years of operation. The Signalbox is also one of the last remaining cabins to use London & North Western block instruments and if you notice very carefully there are a number of out of use levers that have been maintained still operational to set routes ( painted half white to signify out of use but still maintained within the interlocking) Our thanks goes to Network Rails local operations and to the London Northwestern locking fitters for giving us the chance to see behind the scenes of a nightly locking test , a rarely seen occurence but a common if dwindling job on the countries last remaining signal boxes
