Bishop Eusebius Nzigilwa, Mpanda Diocese: Humility and Love The Greatness of God: 15 Years of Holy Orders He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam. In the Jubilee Celebration of 25 Years of Holy Orders, he was appointed Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Mpanda. This is an example of the maturity of the ministry: Priestly and Pastoral for the family of God's people in the Catholic Diocese of Mpanda. By Father Richard A. Mjigwa, C.PP.S. – Vatican. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council say, Christ Jesus, the eternal Shepherd, built the Holy Church, and sent the Apostles as their successors, that is, the Bishops, to be the shepherds of his Church until the end of time. In order that the Episcopate itself might be one and indivisible, he placed Saint Peter above the other Apostles, and in him he placed the permanent and visible source and foundation of the unity of faith and communion. It is in this context that the Bishops are recognized by the Church as successors of the Apostles, since they must proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel for the Church and the nature of her life and mission at all times. The Bishops are entrusted with the ministry of the community, with the help of the Priests and Deacons, leading their flock in the name of God, of which they are shepherds, as teachers of doctrine, priests of sacred worship, ministers of leadership. In essence, the Bishops have the duty of teaching, guiding and sanctifying the People of God. Cf. LG, 20. Therefore, in the persons of the Bishops, assisted by the Priests, there is Christ Jesus, the High Priest, who is present among the faithful and by their glorious ministry they bear witness to and proclaim to all the nations the word of God and give the faithful the Sacraments of faith without end. Again, with their paternal care, they unite new members to his Body by regenerating them from above with water and the Holy Spirit. With their wisdom and prudence, they direct and guide the people of God on the journey towards eternal happiness. In fact, the Bishops are servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God and are entrusted with the ministry of proclaiming and bearing witness to the Good News of God's grace, and the ministry of the Spirit and of justice in glory, always placing themselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who grants them the fullness of the Holy Order. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council insist that the Bishops, in a perfect and visible way, take the place of Christ Jesus himself who is: Teacher, Shepherd and High Priest and act in his person "in Eius persona". Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, they introduce the newly elected into communion with the Bishops. The Episcopal Conference cannot have authority without being united with the Holy Father, the Successor of Saint Peter. Pope Francis briefly states the main qualities of a Bishop as: humility and service; things that are well defined by Saint Paul, the Apostle in his Letter to Titus, indicating the basic things that must be followed and implemented by Bishops, in order to complete what is lacking in the life and mission of the Church; by choosing and establishing elders who are suitable for the leadership of the Church; good and sober people, lovers of justice and saints; people who are good examples to be emulated by the society around them. The Bishop has the responsibility to pray for all people, recognizing that, fundamentally, he is a man of God, chosen from among people for service, to ensure that, he promotes and maintains Worship and Piety of God, fundamental elements in protecting and maintaining the dignity and respect of the human person created in the image and likeness of God. May this mission enable the Bishop to be a generous leader, recognizing that, Christ Jesus is the one who calls his servants and consecrates them to carry out the work of redemption!
