The pumping sections of the heart are the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle. In the heart, oxygen-poor blood flows from parts of the body through large veins into the right atrium. The blood then moves into the right ventricle, which contracts, sending the blood out of the heart to receive oxygen from the lungs. Oxygenated blood leaves the lungs and flows into the left atrium, then passes into the left ventricle. Finally, the left ventricle contracts, sending oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body. If you have heart failure, your heart has lost its ability to pump enough blood to meet your body's needs. It's possible that your ventricular walls are weak or damaged and unable to pump enough blood from your heart. You may also have thickened, stiff ventricular walls that prevent your heart from filling with enough blood. If you have left-sided heart failure, your left ventricle doesn't send enough oxygenated blood to your body, making you feel tired and short of breath. Left ventricular failure also causes increased blood pressure in the blood vessels between your lungs and left ventricle. This increased pressure forces blood out of the lung tissue and into the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. If you have right-sided heart failure, your right ventricle can't contract strongly enough to pump blood to the lungs. This results in blood pooling in the veins, leading to fluid buildup called edema in the body's tissues. Over time, heart failure on both sides of the heart results in weakening and swelling of the ventricles, which pump less blood to the body. To compensate for the reduced blood flow, the nervous system releases stress hormones that increase the speed and force of the heartbeat. Unfortunately, the constant release of these stress hormones worsens heart failure because they damage the muscle cells in the ventricles. The most common cause of heart failure is coronary artery disease. Other causes that damage the heart and lead to heart failure include high blood pressure, diabetes, diseased, infected, or damaged heart valves, diseased, infected, or damaged heart muscle, irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia), heart defects, poisoning or substance abuse, lung disease, and breathing problems during sleep (sleep apnea). Treatment for heart failure includes medications, lifestyle changes, or, in cases of severe heart failure, heart rhythm assistance devices or surgery. Diuretic medications reduce inflammation in the body by increasing the amount of urine produced by the kidneys. Saphenous angiotensin (SA) inhibitors are medications that allow blood vessels to expand. These inhibitors help lower blood pressure and prevent further damage to the heart by making it easier to pump blood. Beta-blockers are medications that block the effects of stress hormones on the heart. Although beta-blockers slow the heart rate, they are primarily used to protect the heart muscle from long-term damage caused by stress hormones. You may need to make some lifestyle changes, such as exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, limiting salt and alcohol intake, and following a heart-healthy diet. Surgeries for advanced heart failure include coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery to improve blood flow to the heart muscle, heart valve reconstruction surgery to improve blood flow through the heart, and left ventricular reconstruction surgery to remove damaged heart muscle. Surgeries for severe heart failure include the insertion of a device to help the heart pump blood and heart transplantation. ANH12076es
