蒸気のパワー／The Power of Steam

DENJIRO: If you boil water, steam comes out. But did you know that steam holds great power? I have here a flask with water in it. If I boil the water, steam travels through the tube attached to the top. Attached to the middle of the tube is a syringe that can move freely. I'm going to put a one-liter plastic bottle filled with water on top of the syringe as weight. Now, let me light the burner. I'm going to let steam into the syringe. BOY: The plunger went up so easily! DENJIRO: Steam alone was able to lift up the one-liter bottle. You can see the power of steam moving the plunger up and down. This is what is called a "steam engine." As you can see, steam is very powerful. When steam is used to generate electricity, it's known as “thermal power generation." Take a look at this. I've created a model that carries out thermal power generation. I'm going to boil water with this stock pot and produce steam. That steam will be used to spin a turbine attached to a generator and generate electricity. Let's give it a go. I'm going to turn the heat on. BOY: The LED turned on! DENJIRO: You can see that the LED has turned on. With thermal power generation, natural gasses or coal are burned, and the steam that is produced from that energy is used to spin a turbine and generate electricity.
