📖 THE KHMER EMPIRE In the 1860s, French learned societies became fascinated by the civilizations of Southeast Asia, which were then little known in Europe. Scholars exploring Cambodia all wrote of their awe at Angkor… On December 12, 1871, the Official Journal of the French Republic wrote about Angkor: “The mysterious ruins of a gigantic city have announced that there [...] there were empires, nations, arts, a civilization.” These remains show that, like all others, the Khmer Empire had its rise and fall… What were the origins of this empire? What were the pillars of its power and prosperity, and what were the causes of its decline?
