This was his fourth appearance at the IWP, and he built upon his lecture from the previous year on the topic of artificial intelligence. At the heart of his presentation was a bold thesis: large language models could think—without consciousness, admittedly, but in reality. According to Gabriel, this is just the beginning of the truly interesting story. Until recently, intelligence was understood in the sense of Alan Turing: as the ability to solve a problem in the shortest possible time—efficiency intelligence. However, with the advent of so-called transformer models, this has fundamentally changed: these systems process entire texts not linearly, but simultaneously—a fourth dimension of logical space, one that was previously unknown even to classical logic of judgment and reasoning. Gabriel dates the decisive turning point to May 13, 2024: With the new, emotionally trained version of ChatGPT, AI has transformed from a mere efficiency tool into a conversational partner to whom millions of people confide personal and intimate matters they wouldn't tell any human being. Gabriel's analogy: Humanity has undressed before self-constructed aliens that now reside, as it were, within its very core. From this, Gabriel draws not a call for more regulation, but for better design. If AI systems function as "magic mirrors," what matters is what we show them: Terminator-like scenarios can be avoided by building mirrors of our own goodness—that is, "ethical intelligences" trained with human value judgments. For Europe, this is not a burden, but an untapped opportunity: While China is already investing specifically in ethical AI, this represents a strategic competitive advantage that hardly anyone has yet exploited. Ethics, Gabriel concluded, is not expensive, but rather cost-effective – those who take it seriously ultimately benefit economically.
