Jacob's Well looks like a beautiful swimming hole in the Texas Hill Country. Clear water, 68 degrees, families on summer weekends. Twelve feet below the surface, the cave begins. Thirty feet down the passage bends, the light disappears, and the chambers start. In the third chamber, at 80 feet deep, there is a passage that appears to lead upward — toward the surface, toward safety. It doesn't. At least one diver died inside it thinking they were going home. In Germany in 2014, a veteran cave explorer fell 1,000 metres underground when a rock hit his head at 1:30 in the morning. Getting him out took 728 rescuers and eleven days. Two years later he went back into caves.
