Alexandre Afonso | Final Cut | Episódio 27 | Temporada 5

Renowned journalist, commentator, and narrator of football matches, and now also a presenter on Channel 11, Alexandre Afonso accepted the challenge and, in another episode of Final Cut, revisited his career in radio, mainly at Antena 1, and on television, a project he was part of six years ago. The natural partnership he built with journalist Nuno Matos was dissected in detail and even involved a surprise. While they no longer commentate on games together after 20 consecutive years of remarkable chemistry, the Channel 11 journalist is clear: "If Portugal reached the final of the 2026 World Cup, I had to commentate with Nuno Matos... it had to be," he declared. In a career that began in Portalegre in 1989, there are plenty of stories. And the most difficult to overcome came during the 2006 World Cup. "Losing my voice in the middle of the Portugal-Iran match at the 2006 World Cup changed everything in my life," the communications professional acknowledges, in an emotional testimony. And while it's true that he was present at several European and World Championships, even if he wishes Portugal would win "10 more European Championships and 10 more World Championships," nothing will surpass what was experienced in France at Euro 2016. "Portugal must necessarily be grateful to Fernando Santos," he says, praising the achievement of the coach who gave Portugal its first and only European Football Championship title in its history. https://sportstailors.co.uk/   / sportstailors     / sportstailors     / sportstailors   00:00 Childhood and early experiences in journalism 18:52 Connection with Nuno Matos and reporting on the National Team since Euro 2000 43:15 Memories of Euro 2016 54:30 National Team at the 2026 World Cup and criticism of Ronaldo 01:04:56 Canal 11 challenge and an inevitable return
