Ford RV Oil Pressure Gauge Not Working - Fixed 82 Ford Jamboree 7.5L 460
Troubleshoot and repair non functional oil pressure gauge. I will show you how to diagnose and fix an oil pressure sending unit and replace the wiring to your oil pressure gauge to restore function. We are going over how to troubleshoot and fix an oil gauge that is all the way at zero. First, pull over immediately. Turn the motor off. Without oil pressure your vehicle will be damaged. I checked to be sure I had oil, and I did. Then I turned on the engine to check for knocks and pings. Everything was running as it was supposed to be, there was no smoke coming out of the exhaust and the temperature was fine. I used a flashlight to check the oil and could see that everything was lubricated. Now I know that I probably have a problem with the oil pressure sending unit, the wire going from the oil pressure sending unit to the oil gauge, or the oil gauge itself. Those are the three things to trouble shoot. I will now go through how to test these things and what I did to repair and replace the problem. My RV has a Ford 460 V8 engine, it’s a gasoline engine, 7.5 litre from 1982 (I accidentally said this engine was a 5.7 liter engine when in fact the Ford 460 is a 7.5 liter engine. Thank you to a viewer that pointed that out). The oil pressure sending unit looks like this on my particular model. It will be located in one of two places: by the oil filter or the back of the motor by the intake manifold. Be sure you can access that. I pulled the dash out to access mine. I pulled the wire off, perhaps it’s a dirty wire. You can clean that up and it might come back on. That wasn’t the case for me, so I decided to test the wiring using a voltmeter. Attach that to a ground and attach to the wire and turn the key to the on position. I did not get a reading from that. Now that I know it was my wire that was faulty, I ran a new wire and you can see that flashing. I also replaced the oil sending unit because it was very old and I didn’t want to have to repair it later. If your wire is working, it is almost certainly your oil pressure sending unit. These are around twenty dollars to replace. I will now show you how to do that. I added teflon tape to be sure there are no leaks. Screw your new part in, hand-tight, and then reconnect your wire. You should now have oil pressure on your gauge if that was the problem. If it is not working, you may need to check your wiring. I ran new wiring to the oil pressure sending unit. If the wire is good and the oil pressure sending unit is good, you may need to replace your gauge. They are fairly inexpensive. These are the basic methods that you will go through to fix that problem. I hope that helps you out. Thanks for watching and Happy Camping!
