Highway 12 through White Pass connects the Yakima Valley on the eastern slope of the Cascades to the Cowlitz River valley on the western slope, crossing at White Pass at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet. The route is one of the lower Cascade crossings in Washington — lower than Stevens Pass to the north and Chinook Pass to the northeast — which keeps it accessible for more of the year than the higher elevation crossings and gives it a character distinctly its own. The eastern approach along the Naches River corridor is among the more pleasant river-road pairings in the state. The Naches River drains a substantial portion of the eastern Cascades before joining the Yakima River near the city of Yakima, and Highway 12 follows it upstream through a canyon that narrows and deepens as the elevation climbs. The river runs clear and fast in May, fed by snowmelt from the peaks above, and the road follows its curves closely enough that the water is a continuous presence in the early portion of the drive.
