Deep beneath the earth, a world of breathtaking blue lies sleeping. This is Ryūsendō Cave in Iwate Prefecture—one of the Three Great Limestone Caves of Japan, alongside Akiyoshidō in Yamaguchi and Ryūgadō in Kōchi. With a known length of over 4 kilometers and a depth of 249 meters, the cave's full extent is still under exploration, with theories suggesting it may exceed 5 kilometers. The cave, along with the bats that inhabit it, is designated as a National Natural Monument of Japan. The greatest allure of Ryūsendō is its underground lakes, which boast some of the clearest water in the world. Three of the eight known lakes are open to the public, with the deepest plunging to 98 meters. Filtered through the vast forests above, ancient groundwater emerges here after a long journey, forming these ethereal, dragon-blue pools. This spring water has been selected as one of Japan's "100 Famous Waters" and has been recognized globally, receiving the highest Grand Gold Medal from Monde Selection.
