In this class you will learn a little about the life of the pre-modernist writer Euclides da Cunha and his main work, Os Sertões! Come and see Professor Camila explain it properly :D Euclides Rodrigues Pimenta da Cunha was born in Fazenda da Saudade, in Cantagalo, RJ, on January 20, 1866. In addition to being a writer, he worked as a military engineer, journalist, essayist and historian. Son of Manoel Rodrigues Pimenta da Cunha, a native of Bahia, and Eudóxia Moreira da Cunha. His father was a bookkeeper on coffee plantations in the Province of Rio de Janeiro. In 1869, at the age of three, he lost his mother. The following year, he moved with his younger sister, Adélia, to Teresópolis, where he was cared for by his aunt Rosinda and Urbano Gouveia. The latter took him in but died shortly thereafter, in 1871. This fate led the two orphans to live in São Fidélis, with their aunt Laura Moreira Garcez, who was married to Colonel Magalhães Garcez. Euclides da Cunha began his school life in 1874, in that city, at Colégio Caldeira, run by the Portuguese republican Francisco José Caldeira. In 1877, he moved to his paternal grandparents' house in Salvador, and began studying at Colégio Carneiro Ribeiro, run by the great Bahian philologist. In 1879, he returned to Rio, living with his uncle Antônio Pimenta da Cunha. He studied at the Anglo-American, Vitório da Costa and Meneses Vieira schools, until transferring to the well-known Externato Aquino in 1883. The following year, on December 4, he published his first article in the newspaper O Democrata, which he had founded with other colleagues. During the same period, he wrote a book of poems, Ondas, which remained unpublished. He enrolled at the Polytechnic School and, due to lack of resources, transferred in January 1866 to the Military School of Praia Vermelha. This institution was free and the main center of republican propaganda in the Court led by Benjamin Constant. On November 4, 1888, student Euclides da Cunha, during a visit by the Minister of War, Counselor Tomás Coelho, went out of uniform and, in protest against the Monarchy, tried to break his bayonet saber. Unable to do so, he threw it at the Minister's feet. Pardoned by the Emperor, he was expelled from the Army on December 14 and went to São Paulo, where, at the end of that year, he began to collaborate with A Província de São Paulo, later known as O Estado de São Paulo. With the proclamation of the Republic, he was reinstated in the Army and promoted to second lieutenant. He began to collaborate with the Gazeta de Notícias da Capital Federal. On January 8, 1890, he enrolled in the Escola Superior de Guerra, where he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. On September 10, he married Ana Ribeiro, daughter of General Solon Ribeiro. In 1891, he enrolled in the Escola Superior de Guerra. The following year, he was promoted to First Lieutenant and received a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Physical and Natural Sciences. He returned to work for O Estado de São Paulo. In 1893, Euclides requested, as required by law for newly graduated engineers, a year of internship at the Central do Brasil Railroad, to which he was appointed on August 16. With the Armada Revolt, he worked on the construction of legalist fortifications on Morro da Conceição. He was transferred to the city of Campanha, Minas Gerais, to renovate a barracks from 1895. On June 13, 1896, he left the Army, retired as a First Lieutenant, and went to live in the city of São Paulo. On September 18, he was appointed assistant engineer of the Superintendence of Public Works of the State of São Paulo, traveling extensively throughout the state. On March 14, 1897, he published the article “Nossa Vendeia” in O Estado de São Paulo, about the war that was taking place in Canudos, in the interior of Bahia. At the invitation of Júlio de Mesquita, owner of the newspaper, he went as a war correspondent on August 4, in the entourage of the Minister of War, Marshal Bittencourt. After a few days in Salvador, he arrived in Queimadas on September 4 and, three days later, in Monte Santo, the headquarters of the loyalist troops.
