At around 2:24 a.m., residents of a multi-storey building in the TKD Extension area of Govindpuri were asleep when smoke suddenly began rising from the building. Panic spread throughout the building as residents rushed toward balconies and windows, desperately trying to escape. Firefighters and police teams arrived at the scene and launched rescue operations. Several people suffered severe burn injuries and were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital. Despite medical efforts, three victims—Pankaj Pandey, Sushila Devi, and Sonia Kumari—succumbed to their injuries. Initially, authorities suspected the fire might have been caused by an electrical fault or an accidental short circuit. A case was registered under sections related to negligence and accidental death. However, the investigation took a dramatic turn after police examined CCTV footage collected from the area. The footage reportedly showed a woman heading toward the building shortly before the fire broke out. This became the first major lead for investigators. Police then analyzed call records, questioned local residents, and gathered technical evidence to reconstruct the events leading up to the tragedy. The investigation eventually led officers to a 17-year-old girl. During questioning, she allegedly revealed that she had been encouraged to set fire to a scooter parked in the building. According to police, a woman identified as Sarita had provided her with petrol and matches. The alleged plan was to target a scooter belonging to a man named Deepak, who lived on the fifth floor of the building. But what was supposedly intended as a targeted act of revenge quickly spiraled out of control. The flames spread from the scooter to the parking area and then throughout the building. What began as an attempt to damage property allegedly resulted in a catastrophic fire that killed three people and shattered multiple families. Police say the motive behind the conspiracy was a long-running financial dispute between Deepak and his cousin Niranjan. Investigators believe Niranjan wanted revenge against Deepak and planned the attack on his scooter. However, the consequences proved far more devastating than anyone involved may have anticipated. According to police, 33-year-old Niranjan is the alleged mastermind behind the plot. Investigators say he has a criminal history and had recently been released from jail. Authorities also allege that Sarita and a man named Rajkumar played important roles in planning and executing the conspiracy, while the minor girl was used to carry out the act. So far, police have apprehended four individuals in connection with the case—the minor girl, Sarita, Niranjan, and Rajkumar. Serious charges have now been added to the FIR, including criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, attempted murder, arson, and other related offences.
