Microphones were set in the wide (A-B) position. SHOW NOTES: Wish I wrote these notes directly following the show. I never expected the Geordie Greep band to play 2 hours 38 minutes that night. What transpired in Brattleboro, Vermont at this show was nothing short of pure magic - a walk through Greep's The New Sound album with extended arrangements that allowed for jamming, over a dozen teases to familiar classic songs (mostly by The Beatles), a jam on Chick Corea's Spain, a Willie Colón cover led by percussionist Santiago Moyano, an original by keyboardist Cameron Campbell, plus almost a half hour of improv outside the structure of any songs. Worth the drive to Vermont in poor weather! This band digs deeply into jazz-rock fusion and Latin instrumentation, with splashes of avant-garde intensity. Geordie's playful approach to these sets has him inserting teases and partial covers at will throughout the set; albeit some nights more than others. This band is sincerely groovy and almost entirely high energy. It's hard to pick highlights from this show, I'd recommend the whole thing. However if there must be a shortlist, I'd suggest hearing the stretch from Terra through Dangerous Liaisons. Kicking off with one of my favorite album tracks in Terra (note the solo from keyboardist Cameron Campbell), with a Chick Corea jam in the center, the big promo single Holy, Holy in there (with notable guitar solo from Ethan Marsh), the percussion-driven Cua cua ra, cua cua (Willie Colón cover performed by Santiago Moyano), and an improv jam with a medley of teases at the end, this 75 minute run of music gives a near-full flavor of what ths band brings to the table. Like most others I came into familiarity with Geordie Greep by way of his band black midi, who recently announced its indefinite hiatus. I got to catch this band (minus guitarist Ethan Marsh) in New York City in September 2024 prior to the release of Greep's debut album The New Sound. Since the live show was my first encounter with this material, the North American band had the opportunity to define to me the way this music should be played. The album turned out to be excellent as well, but I prefer the less grand arrangements, fast and furious fusion, and hungry intensity of this live lineup. Fast forward five months, this music is now released, road tested, and the band is stronger than ever. There's more cohesion, to put it simply; September felt like a lively experiment for these guys, now they feel like a band.
