AMERICAN SOCCER FAN lives Portugal’s REALEST Derby

Portugal’s “Derbi do Minho” might not be the biggest derby in the country - but those in the know about Portuguese football tend to agree it is the BEST, the PUREST, the most HEATED, the most MEANINGFUL. As an American soccer fan, Braga’s Estadio Municipal has always been on my radar since EURO 2004, with its unique design being carved into the rock face of a small mountain. So when I was visiting Lisbon (where I saw Benfica play!), I realized that the Derbi do Minho was only a few hours away by train, and I just had to experience it myself! A derby between two close neighbors of just 20km, Sporting Braga and Vitoria Guimaraes carry onto the field a centuries-old cultural and political rivalry. As two stalwart cities of Portugal’s northern “Minho” region, each city was integral in the founding of Portugal as a nation, serving as brave bastions against foreign influences. Although united in patriotism, there has always been a tense rivalry between the two cities, exhibited by the fact that there is not a direct railway line between the two cities. Historically, the derby is extremely close, with Braga having a slight edge of a few victories over Vitoria in the all-time table. This match was another tense affair, with red cards, fan trouble, flares, fireworks, and plenty of drama to keep the flames of passion stoked until the next rivalry match!
