The gospel is often reduced to a simple message that God loves you, but Scripture points to something fuller and more demanding. From John the Baptist to Jesus to the apostles, the consistent proclamation was repentance. Repentance in the New Testament means more than returning to a right path. It means turning completely around and changing your entire direction. God's love is not the message of the gospel. It is the motive behind it. Love without repentance leaves people without what they truly need, and repentance without love produces fear rather than faith. The two must work together.
