STARKIE TRACK - IMPASSABLE? - Roothy
https://roothy.com.au STARKIE TRACK - IMPASSABLE? - Roothy Up Cape York there's one of those lesser known tracks on the east coast that's got it all - and right when you think you've made it, there's Desert Creek, mostly impossible and loaded with crocodiles. Like everything up the Cape this depends on the time of year and how high the wet's been but there's tones more tips in here for anyone keen to go try the WORLD'S BEST 4WD playground. Not only that, it kicks off at the Lions Den. You beauty!!! During The Wet, from late October to April when the Cape gets 90% of it’s annual rainfall, the tropical monsoon conditions make travelling virtually impossible. The rest of the year rainfall is sparse and temperatures vary from minimums of 15 degrees to maximums of 34 degrees with average daily temperatures from 25 to 28 degrees being the norm. Ideally, the best time to head north is at the tail end The Wet when the creeks are reasonably full and the tracks lined with plenty of summer grasses. It can be risky – a late rain storm can isolate you for a couple of days – but there’ll be less people travelling and the country’s fresh with new growth. If you plan an early assault, check conditions with the police in Coen or Weipa. May, June and July are favourite months for seasoned ‘Capers’ but anytime from then until late October guarantees a great experience. The local graziers, just like the Aboriginals of old, often start big burn-offs in the month or so before the wet season kicks off to prepare the land for more growth. Whenever grass fires are around you’ll need to take particular care of things like wind direction and camping sites. The rule’s are simple – don’t dally anywhere there’s fire and if it’s ahead of you, wait and ask drivers coming the other way if the track’s cut off or not. These fires pass quickly enough but embers can still set fire to roof top tents, camping trailers and canvas canopies. Don’t forget, in an emergency, a shaken beer can put out a lot of fire!
