He was pastor of the New Life churches in Méier, Engenho Novo, Botafogo, and the Cathedral. He is married to Marta and has two sons, Pastor John McAlister and Andrew. History of the New Life Christian Church: Historically Conscious We are heirs to more than 2,000 years of witness from generations of Christians who preceded us in faith. Although we cannot and should not imitate them in every aspect, we believe there is much richness to be appreciated and recovered in the history of the Church. Therefore, in our worship of God we observe several historical Christian practices that we consider valuable for strengthening the faith of the Church: the confession of the Apostles' Creed (the summary of the Christian faith), the Lord's Prayer ("Our Father"), the weekly celebration of the Holy Communion, and the symbolism of the Cross (the key symbol of Christianity). Protestant and Reformed Among all the historical branches of Christianity, we identify primarily with the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation, among which are: the final authority of the Holy Scriptures (Sola Scriptura); the sufficient and exclusive mediation of Jesus Christ between God and humanity (solus Christus); The necessity and exclusivity of grace to save sinners (sola gratia); the necessary and sufficient response of repentance and faith in Christ for salvation (sola fide); the attribution of exclusive glory to God for all the work of Creation, Redemption, and Consummation of History (Soli Deo Gloria); and the shared priesthood of all Christians in the life and ministry of the Church. Pentecostal experience Finally, we are children of the 20th-century Pentecostal missionary movement and the fruit of the missionary work of Bishop Roberto McAlister, founder of the New Life Christian Church in Brazil in 1960. We believe in the indispensable role of the Holy Spirit in fulfilling the mission of the Church, from the proclamation of the Gospel to the operation and development of salvation in the life of the believer, including the generation of the fruit of the Spirit and the granting of spiritual gifts for the edification of the entire Church. Our Mission: To go into all the world and make disciples, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the power of the Spirit, and gathering these disciples into churches, so that they may worship the Lord and obey His commandments, now and forever, to the glory of God the Father. [Extracted from Kevin DeYoung & Greg Gilbert, What is the Mission of the Church?, p. 82] Our Values: Worship The primary motivation of the Church is to render glory and honor to the Lord, from fervent and reverent worship of God to service in the world, both collectively and individually, whether in the gathering of the saved or in family and private devotion. Proclamation The primary task of the Church is to proclaim the whole Word of God to all men for the whole man, bearing witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the faithful proclamation and systematic teaching of the Holy Scriptures. Fellowship The necessary result of proclaiming and surrendering to the Gospel is life in fellowship with the Church of the Lord Jesus, marked by mutual love and the discipline characteristic of Christ's disciples. Witness The Church's witness consists of sharing the Gospel as well as living a life consistent with this Gospel by those who profess the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Service The Church's witness also involves the service rendered by each believer to the Church and as the Church, through the stewardship of both our words and our time, as well as our resources and talents.
