The Santa Teresa Fortress is located 33 km from the city of Chuy and is classified as a Historical Monument of Uruguay. The Fortress played a strategic role in the struggles for independence of the region that lasted until 1828. With the help of British diplomacy, the region became independent as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. A treaty of May 15, 1852 established the border demarcation at the mouth of the Chuí Stream. From 1927 onwards, a commission formed by architects and a historian began a restoration project of the monument, which is now open to the public. The daily life of the fortress has been brought to the present day, including the commander's house, the officers' and troops' barracks, the chapel, the powder house, the kitchen and food storage, the stables, and various workshops. DOCUMENTATION FOR ENTRY INTO URUGUAY (updated 10/22/2024): 1) Valid passport for Uruguayan Immigration to stamp your entry into the country, or: 2) Updated ID card, issued less than 10 years ago. Since Uruguayan Immigration cannot stamp your ID card, you need to fill out an international entry and exit card to get the stamp. When you arrive at customs, go straight in and request the form to speed up the process, then get in line. The form basically asks for the same information as the ID card. 3) Valid driver's license (Digital is acceptable, but bring a printed copy). 4) CRLV - Vehicle Registration and Licensing Certificate printed with quality (QR code). If the vehicle is not in the name of the person who will be driving, the owner needs to sign an authorization and register it at a notary office. 5) Green Card Insurance issued by an insurance broker: Porto Seguro – must be printed on green paper.
