One of the many winding roads leading to the Serra do Gerês, together with the Serra da Peneda, makes this the only National Park in mainland Portugal classified by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. A mountain range that offers truly wild nature combined with a cultural heritage, with access to small human settlements in harmony with nature. In the southwestern part of the Peneda-Gerês park lies the village of Gerês, which very recently had its name changed; its origins lie in the Gerês Thermal Baths. A mountain town with the highest population density, surpassed only by the municipal seat, Terras do Bouro. A small town that provides visitors with all the conditions for well-being, enthusiasm, and excitement for the great adventures that the mountains offer. A village with few inhabitants, who are outnumbered by visitors during peak seasons, is crossed by only one street, with several buildings, all linked to tourism, from guesthouses and hotels to restaurants and shops. The so-called Gerês Thermal Baths initiated the development of the area, gradually giving way, over the years, to a space for nature tourism. In fact, although it has always been known as Gerês Thermal Baths, it has now become a point of reference and starting point for exploring the mountains. While not possessing a rich architectural heritage, the village is known primarily for its nature and what you can enjoy from it: A landscape of valleys distinguished by the different colors of the crops grown throughout the year, the slopes covered in scrubland and thickets providing firewood and pasture, and in the higher areas, expanses of clearings for shepherds. Amidst this unmistakable landscape, the presence of settlements in areas that offer good sun exposure and are close to water sources contributes to its appeal. A flora based on oak groves, shrub formations, meadows, and riparian vegetation, and a fauna full of diverse animal species such as eagles, wild horses, butterflies, and also river trout, eels, water voles, otters, water lizards, and abundant fish in the only two rivers, Cávado and Homem, that abound in this mountain range. We find lagoons and waterfalls, and much more, in different parts of the mountain range. A wide variety of trails of varying distances, accessible on foot, horseback, or even by mountain bike. A cultural heritage that blends with the natural landscape through walls, irrigation channels, paved paths, bridges, granaries, ditches, mills, and megalithic remains, somewhat identifying the various civilizations that passed through here, such as the Celts and the Romans.
