Absichtlich ruiniert? Warum sieht THE THING (2011) so billig aus? | Filmkritik & Analyse
In 2004, producers Marc Abraham and Eric Newman produced the highly successful remake of the zombie classic Dawn of the Dead. A few years later, they wanted to build on this success and scoured the Universal Pictures archives for suitable franchises that would also lend themselves to remakes. And they found one: John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982 was the perfect template. Together with Dutch director Matthijs van Heijningen, they produced a prequel to the horror classic in 2011. In trying to do justice to both, 2011's THE THING forgets why the original is still so beloved decades later: It's not the practical effects or the actors' performances, but the feeling of fear, isolation, and the menacing otherness. One could have forgiven the film a great deal: the mediocre CGI, the thin and predictable plot, the somewhat too modern look for a film supposed to be set in the '80s—if only it had captured the atmosphere of the original better. Unfortunately, it didn't. Instead, THE THING is a slasher film riddled with pacing issues and clichés, complete with a final girl and the "nine little Jägermeister" formula. It's rather disappointing compared to the original, but I'm a big fan of the slasher genre, so THE THING really grabbed me for the most part. This remake/prequel to THE THING is entertaining, fun, and well-directed, so I'm giving it 6.9 out of 10. ...
