Teacher Tapp asked hundreds of teachers about their discipline issues and rules at their schools. The statement: "At my school, several colleagues have classroom discipline problems" was supported by 49% of primary school teachers and 49% of secondary school teachers. Teachers therefore see many discipline problems around them! According to teachers, these discipline problems play a major role in teacher turnover. This figure is 56% in primary education and over 61% in secondary education. Therefore, many discipline problems are being reported, and according to teachers, these problems have a significant impact on teacher turnover! One in 10 colleagues in the staffroom is considering leaving their teaching profession because of these discipline problems. A large proportion of your colleagues (around 70%) would like you to make eye contact when you see or hear discipline problems and see if they need help. A worrying finding in secondary education is the high percentage of teachers who indicate that half of their colleagues do not adhere to the school-wide code of conduct. In secondary education, you see that 45% of colleagues agree with the statement that their classroom management is hampered by the lack or non-enforcement of clear, school-wide rules of conduct for students!
