TEDx Met: Icons -- Meredith Monk October 19, 2013 Theo Bleckmann and Emily Eagen, longtime performers of the work of composer Meredith Monk, come together today to perform "Hocket" from Monk's music-theater piece Facing North (1990). A synthesis of music, gesture, ritual, and sound, Facing North conjures a barren wilderness and the fortitude and tenderness of two people surviving within it. A virtuoso feat, "Hocket" is a composition wherein two singers share a single melody, relying entirely on each other to bring it to completion. Meredith Monk is an American composer, singer, director, choreographer, and creator of new opera, music-theater works, films, and installations. A pioneer in extended vocal technique and interdisciplinary performance, Monk's work thrives at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound. Her groundbreaking exploration of the voice as an instrument, able to express an eloquent language in and of itself, expands the boundaries of musical composition, creating landscapes of sound that unearth feelings, energies, and memories for which there are no words.
