I have come to Buddha Seonwon, an early Buddhist practice center located at the foot of Deogyusan Mountain in Geochang, Gyeongnam Province, to meet the head monk, Venerable Jingyeong. The monk has recently published a book titled *Freedom from Self, Illuminating the World*. Since he entered the monastic life in 1985, this book captures his quest for enlightenment, a journey of intense practice spanning 40 years. In particular, Venerable Jingyeong has renamed Anapanasati, the Buddha's representative meditation method, as "Breath Observation." As a meditator who has practiced this Breath Observation method for decades, the book is written with great precision and empirical evidence, so it appears it will be of practical help to those who practice meditation. While practitioners of Hwadu Seon (Koan Meditation) are often energetic and unconventional, Vipassana practitioners seem to adhere strictly to norms, appearing exemplary and serene. However, I have often felt a lack of freshness from those who have studied early Buddhist scriptures or practitioners of Southern Buddhism, as they tend to feel like textbooks. Ven. Jingyeong’s book, *Freedom from Self, Illuminating the World*, is a book I would like to recommend to readers as it is fresh, entertaining, and profound. The Venerable has candidly shared his life story, and the book contains deep counseling that covers not only Vipassana practice but also psychological issues. In this interview, Ven. Jingyeong reveals even the personal wounds and pain from his childhood, so I believe that many wounded individuals will be inspired by his experiences to find solutions for healing their traumas. Furthermore, Ven. Jingyeong graduated from Unmunsa Sangha College and the Department of Buddhist Studies at Dongguk University. After practicing Hwadu Seon (Koan Meditation) at domestic Zen centers, he went to Myanmar to master most of the various Vipassana traditions, eventually choosing the Pa-Auk Saadho tradition, which focuses on Samadhi practice, as his final path of practice. Given his experience with diverse traditions, there is much content that will be of great help to viewers interested in meditation and Buddhist practice. ---------------------------- Chohyun TV Hyusimjeong Chohyun | Former religion specialist reporter for The Hankyoreh, author, meditator, and General Director of Nachatsa [email protected] What do you want to possess?
