The word 'tal' means lake and this lake has been mesmerizing the tourists from a long time. The northern side of the lake is called 'Mallital' and the southern side is referred to as 'Tallital'. The lake is 1.5 km in length. The Mall Road stretches along the lake connecting Mallital and Tllital. Mallital is characterized by a large plain ground popularly known as "The Flatts". On one side of the Flatts, is the Naina Devi Temple and a Gurudwara and on the other side, a Mosque. This flatland is considered as the meeting and marketing place. The Band Stand at Mallital was built during the time when the legendary Jim Corbet was a member of "Nainital Nagar Palika". This hill station built around the Naini Lake is considered to be the entry point to the Kumaon tour. There are plenty of budget and luxury hotels near and around the Mall Road. Two complete days would be sufficient to cover the entire Nainital.
