She Was born on 13 August 1936 in Madras, Madras Presidency, British India. Her father was Mandyam Dhati Raman. Her mother Vasundhara Devi was a leading actress in Tamil Cinema in the 1940s. Vyjayanthimala married Chamanlal Bali, a Punjabi Hindu Arya Samaji from Delhi. After marriage, she gave up her acting career and moved to Chennai. They have a son, Suchindra Bali.
