FOREST CAFE "GALICIA'S MONUMENTAL TREES AS A SOURCE OF BIODIVERSITY: DENDROMICROHABITATS" March 12, 2026 Objectives of this Forest Cafe: To introduce dendromicrohabitats and explain their typological diversity, formation processes, and ecological functions in living and dead trees. To highlight the role of Galicia's monumental and ancient trees as key reservoirs of dendromicrohabitats and forest biodiversity hotspots. To analyze the factors that determine the presence and diversity of dendromicrohabitats at different scales (tree, stand, and landscape), including age, species, environmental conditions, and forest management. To demonstrate the relationship between dendromicrohabitats and biodiversity, emphasizing their importance as refuges, food sources, and breeding grounds for fauna, fungi, and other specialized organisms. * Importance of dendromicrohabitats as a tool for forest planning and management. Speaker: J. Gaspar Bernárdez Villegas holds a PhD in Agricultural and Forestry Research and is a landscape architect. He specializes in the study and conservation of monumental trees in Galicia and has participated in updating the Galician Catalogue of Singular Trees since 2006. He has analyzed more than 1,000 unique trees and tree formations. He is also the author of several scientific and popular publications on Galician flora. He currently works as a Tree Technician at the Areeiro Phytopathological Station of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, participating in projects for the diagnosis and protection of Galician tree flora.
