The Legend of the Great Eucalyptus Tree of Egaña Castle in Rauch: In 1918, when San Francisco Castle was built in Rauch, Eugenio Díaz Vélez had an Australian eucalyptus tree planted right in front of the main gate. He wanted it to be the first tree visitors saw and the last to bid farewell to the workers as they left. The tree and the castle grew together. They say the architect, a certain Luis Dubois, buried a gold coin and a letter under the roots, saying: “As long as this tree lives, the castle will not fall.” Everything changed in the 70s, when the castle was used as a juvenile detention center. One stormy night in 1972, there was a riot. A 14-year-old boy was found dead in the basement, and a guard was blamed. The guard swore he was innocent and that the eucalyptus tree saw everything. Before being taken to jail, he hugged the trunk and said, “You are my witness.” Since the detention center closed in 1979, the castle has been in ruins, but the eucalyptus tree remains intact.
