*Prehistoric Hongshan Materials: Nüwa Stone, Goldstone, Zircon, Red Stone, and Amazonite* *Nüwa Stone* is the earliest mineral ever recorded in ancient Chinese historical literature. It is not only a treasured gem of northern China but also one of the rarest minerals on Earth. Displaying brilliant multicolored hues that symbolize the transformation of the Five Elements, it was formed deep beneath the earth millions of years ago. During the Yanshan orogeny, molten magma repeatedly erupted from the earth's interior and fused with existing crystal deposits, creating this magnificent and colorful mineral treasure known as **Nüwa Stone**. This *Nüwa Stone Rhinoceros* features the distinctive Hongshan craftsmanship known as *"straight-line carving"* and *"carving within carving"**. Likewise, this **Nüwa Stone Toad* also displays these characteristic techniques. Both are considered authentic Hongshan artifacts. *Goldstone* is extremely rare. It is a natural jade-like stone containing numerous golden specks, from which it derives its name. Because of its noble appearance, Goldstone was often used to carve figures of the highest status, such as the Hongshan *Martial Deity* shown above. *Zircon* is a naturally occurring silicate mineral and one of the oldest minerals found in the Earth's crust. Like diamonds, zircon naturally occurs in various colors, including red, yellow, green, and colorless. The *red zircon* piece shown here depicts a sleeping child and exhibits Hongshan's characteristic *straight-line carving* and *carving within carving**. The **green zircon* piece represents the *Sun Deity**, with its **straight-line drilled holes* and *carving within carving* clearly visible. Therefore, both zircon carvings are unquestionably authentic Hongshan artifacts. This material is sometimes mistaken for **chicken blood stone**, but it is definitely not. Instead, it is a natural mineral that can also be regarded as a natural gemstone. I refer to it simply as **Red Stone**. This gemstone contains distinctive green mineral inclusions and is relatively uncommon among Hongshan materials. Although this *Red Stone Sun Deity* carving has simple lines, it nevertheless possesses the unmistakable Hongshan features of *straight-line carving* and **carving within carving**. *Amazonite* is a mineral commonly found in pegmatites. Major sources include the Amazon region of Brazil, the Ilmen Mountains of Russia's Ural region, as well as the United States, India, Madagascar, Tanzania, and China's Yunnan and Xinjiang provinces. Amazonite occurs in various shades of green and blue-green, ranging from pale green to deep green. High-quality amazonite is sometimes used as a substitute for jade. Amazonite was already being used as a decorative stone during the early Western Zhou Dynasty. In the early 1980s, archaeologists unearthed an early Western Zhou ornament made of amazonite in Baoji, Shaanxi Province. Amazonite is often mistaken for turquoise because turquoise can also appear in blue and green shades. However, turquoise typically contains distinctive black matrix veins, whereas amazonite does not. Although amazonite may seem uncommon today, the ancestors of the Hongshan Culture frequently ground it into powder, mixed it with a prehistoric binding material, and inlaid it into the eyes of various Hongshan carvings. Amazonite comes in both green and blue varieties. This piece, from the collection of our member Tiying, is not reconstructed from powdered amazonite. Instead, it was carved from a single intact piece of amazonite into a Buddha figure and then inlaid onto a meteorite. Carved from green amazonite, this pendant is decorated on both sides. Each side features a winged *Pixiu* in relief. The two Pixiu stand closely together, facing one another with four eyes, symbolizing perfect cooperation and immense spiritual power. The *Pixiu* symbolizes prosperity, career advancement, high rank, wealth, success, and smooth progress in one's endeavors. Taken as a whole, the motif represents *"Twin Pixiu Bringing Wealth and Good Fortune."* The pendant clearly displays the Hongshan hallmarks of *"carving within carving"* and *"straight-line drilled-hole craftsmanship,"* making it an unmistakable Hongshan artifact.
