Today, I'd like to discuss whether minimalists are happy and the addiction to decluttering. You often see on TV and the internet that it's a good idea to throw things away, that minimalists are happy, and that they only have two or three types of clothing and only the bare minimum of furniture. You'll see a lot of articles and features that say, "By doing this, I felt more at ease and happy," "I became richer by limiting my food intake," and "My life has become richer." I think many people wonder if this is really true, or that they can't throw things away, or that they have too many things and are no good. Look at these articles. But if you just take a moment to think clearly, you'll understand. No, that's not true. That's not true, so today I'd like to talk to you from a psychiatrist's perspective about how many things you should own, how much you should throw away, and how much you should declutter your mind. ■What to Suspect Clinically, when a patient says they've thrown things away, that they don't need that many things, or that eating only a minimal amount is fine, or when a family member says that the person has become like that, what should you suspect? When I hear things like that, I don't say things like, "Oh, that's good for you" or "You must be happier now." I usually think, "Something's not right." A common story is that many people with developmental disorders say that throwing away a lot of stuff made them feel better. There are things that we just don't need. There's a person with developmental disorders named Ryoham who works at our clinic and on YouTube. He's also a YouTuber with developmental disorders, and even Ryoham doesn't even have a rice cooker at home. It seems that not having things that people normally have reduces cognitive load and makes things easier. It also seems that impulsively throwing things away can help release the impulsiveness of ADHD and make people feel better. They are able to do this because they are able to follow their unique obsessions and routines, but it can be a bit difficult for most people. Ryo-Ham, for example, only eats one meal a day. They eat one bowl of ramen a day, and spend the whole day on that. They go to the same delicious ramen shop, Budouka, every day. They've been doing that for a year. They have Budouka lunch every day, and quite often only eat one meal a day. It's fine if that's the kind of people they are... but... There are also cases where family members get dragged into this. I think it's common for this to cause problems. The same thing can happen with dementia. It happens as people get older. It's not uncommon for dementia-related people to suddenly throw things away. In particular, people with frontotemporal dementia tend to prefer routine and be impulsive, so I think it's normal to suspect frontotemporal dementia (FTD). It's rare, though. Basically, it's usually just normal dementia, and people often do things impulsively. I would suspect frontotemporal dementia. In national exams and specialist exams, FTD is suspected. It's rare in actual clinical practice, so I think it's just normal dementia. The same thing sometimes happens with depression and bipolar disorder, where people alternate between mania and depression. They can become so pathological that having something around them can cause them pain. The cognitive patterns of eating disorders. They're also extreme, with extreme black-and-white thinking, so they do things like that. People with various addictions also do things like that. They might do something impulsive when they're depressed, or they might do something during the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Or they might do something during the hallucinatory and delusional phase of schizophrenia. I think that's what happens. In any case, when patients say, "I threw away my things and I feel better," they may feel a sense of relief...
