Tailgate Testimony

“Tailgate Testimony” is Track VI from Mud, Motors & Mercy: Revival in the Pines. When the engines settle, the flood lights shut down, and the fire burns low, the real stories begin coming out. This track carries pieces of my actual journey—from Clay Street and Del Paso Heights in North Sacramento to a broken trailer in Palermo, Thermalito, Oroville, addiction, overdose, South Dorm, the loss of my father, sobriety, and the mercy of Jesus Christ. I did not wake up wanting chains around my life. Like many people, I was trying to escape pain I did not know how to face. The substances promised freedom, but eventually they owned the road, the destination, and the man behind the wheel. Jesus did not meet me after I had cleaned everything up. He met me in the wreckage. I share this story because somebody sitting beside a fire, inside a truck, in a garage, on a backroad, or alone after everybody leaves may believe they have gone too far. You have not. Strong people still hurt. Hard workers still need help. Survivors still need somewhere safe to tell the truth. Pull up the tailgate. There is room beside the fire.
