Located 91.3 kilometers from Managua, it sits on the shores of the Pacific, and is 18 kilometers from two of Nicaragua's top 10 beaches: Poneloya and Las Peñitas. León has been the intellectual center of the nation, with a university founded in 1812, for which it is known as the "University City" or "Metropolitan City." It is also an important agricultural and commercial center of Nicaragua. Until Managua was designated the capital of Nicaragua, León rivaled Granada for this status. The city still retains a colonial center today, one of the most beautiful in Latin America. Once in León, we begin by visiting the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of León, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of León, although its official name is the Insigne y Real Basílica Catedral de la Asunción de la Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Catholic church. Its construction is said to have been started and restarted three times. The temple we see today was built between 1747 and 1816 and displays a blend of three styles: colonial, baroque, and neoclassical. In front of its façade, you can see sculptures of lions (a symbol of the city). It consists of five naves. Next to the main altar, on the right side, is the mausoleum of the poet Rubén Darío, Prince of Castilian Literature, a world literary pride who immortalized it in his poetry. Above it is a statue of a mournful lion, mourning the death of the poet Alfonso Cortes. Also in this basilica are other tombs of other poets and illustrious figures. On November 20, 1860, it was elevated to a minor basilica. This church has withstood earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and wars. The city of León boasts the largest cathedral in Central America. Since 1531, it has been the episcopal seat of the first diocese of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua, and since June 28, 2011, the cathedral has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The department of León has ten municipalities, the city has more than 25 neighborhoods, and has more than 16 colonial churches and other churches with modern structures, chapels, and parishes. The most famous neighborhoods are those located in the historic center, such as El Sagrario, Guadalupe, San Juan, San José, San Felipe, El Calvario, San Francisco, El Laborío, Hermita de Dolores, San Sebastián, Zaragoza, and El Coyolar. The indigenous neighborhood of Sutiaba is the largest and one of the most important in the city of León. It is located in the westernmost part of the city and is rich in history, culture, and tradition, which have been passed down orally from generation to generation by its descendants and through chroniclers and historians who have traveled through this territory. The Metropolitan City has several popular markets that are colorful, lively, refreshing, and fun, ideal for immersing yourself in the city's culture. What to visit and see in the city of León? For art lovers, the city has several museums, galleries, and cultural centers, such as the Rubén Darío Archive Museum, the José de la Cruz Mena Municipal Theater, the Parque de los Poetas (Poets Park), the Ortiz Gurdián Foundation art center, the Central Park, where there are street stalls selling fast food, souvenirs, and the various churches and temples that are national heritage sites. The Metropolitan City is attractive for tourism. It offers great hotel options, a gastronomic offering like that delicious pork with yuca, and street food in the various markets and parks. To enjoy a good coffee, there are bohemian restaurants, and at night, bars and nightclubs are a must-see for nightlife. And adventure isn't far behind, with sandboarding on the Cerro Negro volcano. If the day is sunny, the coast of León has a good selection. If you're visiting León, prices are affordable for both domestic and international tourists.
