A Christian MARTYR Under Muslim Occupied Spain

In 9th-century Córdoba, the dazzling capital of Moorish Spain, where Christians lived as second-class subjects under Islamic rule, a nobleman's son named Eulogius grew up making the sign of the cross every time the call to prayer rang from the minaret. As a Mozarabic priest, he became the great defender, chronicler, and spiritual father of the Martyrs of Córdoba, sheltering hidden Christians and writing the letters that steeled figures like the virgin Flora and the young convert Leocritia to face the executioner. Elected Primate of all Spain but never allowed to take his see, Eulogius met his own end on the block in 859 AD; answering the cry from the minaret one final time, with his life.
