The project was commissioned to architects from the General Construction Design Studio – Henryk Buszko and Aleksander Franta, with Tadeusz Szewczyk also participating in the design work. On a 200-hectare site on the slopes of Równica, a spa complex for 7,000 people was planned. It was to include a sanatorium, a rehabilitation hospital, a spa house, and 26 holiday homes. The architects designed 28 holiday buildings, which were to be scattered across the slopes of Równica. The buildings are approximately eight stories high and have a minimum of 200 beds. They are a reinforced concrete structure with a conical shape, giving rise to their common nickname – "pyramids." The original plan also called for four sanatoriums with 200 beds each, which were ultimately incorporated into the single building of the Równica sanatorium. The architects envisioned the complex to be based on modernist forms while also reflecting the mountain landscape. The buildings were intended to reflect the region's unique climate. The dominant feature of the complex is the modernist Równica sanatorium. The column-supported building, stretching across the slope, ranges in height from 5 to 12 stories. The distinctiveness of the form is emphasized by contrasting, alternating dark stripes of windows and balconies and a light, smooth façade. The building was constructed from prefabricated elements supported by a reinforced concrete frame. The Ustroń Zawodzie spa district is considered one of the most interesting urban and architectural projects implemented in Poland after World War II. The complex also stands out among post-war modernist structures worldwide. The design by Franta, Buszka, and Szewczyk was included in "20th-Century World Architecture: The Phaidon Atlas" by Phaidon Publishing House, presenting a review of the best 20th-century world architecture.
