The Ship That Sank in Calm Waters — Estonia Ferry Disaster 1994
On September 28th 1994, a massive car ferry called the Estonia was crossing the Baltic Sea from Tallinn to Stockholm carrying 989 people. The weather was rough but not catastrophic. Ferries cross the Baltic in these conditions every single day. But that night, the Estonia listed to one side. Then further. Then it capsized completely and sank in less than thirty minutes. 852 people died. The official investigation concluded the ship sank due to a stability issue. But divers found a massive hole in the hull — below the waterline, on the side of the ship, with sharp edges torn inward. Not crushed outward. Not caused by rocks or debris. Torn inward. Consistent with one thing only — a collision with another vessel. A large Russian cargo ship called the Mikhail Simonov was in the same area that night. Its hull showed damage consistent with having struck something. Its captain reported a collision to Russian maritime authorities. When Swedish investigators asked to examine the ship, Russia refused. Cited national security. The cargo was classified. Sweden accepted the refusal. The hole in the hull remained unexplained. The investigation was closed. And in 2000, when Swedish television broadcast a documentary raising these questions, the Swedish government passed the Estonia Act — classifying all investigation materials as state secrets for fifty years. The Estonia Act expires in 2050. The survivors who witnessed the collision are aging. The investigators who saw the evidence are aging. And 852 families are still waiting for the truth that their governments decided they were not allowed to know. 🔔 Subscribe to Genzo for more stories about what governments know and what they will never tell you.
