Susumu Hara: Head Coach, Aoyama Gakuin University Track and Field Club Born March 8, 1967, in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Finished 2nd in the 4th leg of the National High School Ekiden in his third year at Sera High School. Finished 3rd in the 5000m at the Japan Intercollegiate Championships in his third year at Chukyo University. 1989: Joined the Chugoku Electric Power Track and Field Club as a first-generation member. 1993: First appearance in the All Japan Corporate Ekiden as captain. 1995: Retired from active competition. Afterward, spent 10 years as a salaried employee at Chugoku Electric Power. 2004: Became head coach of the Aoyama Gakuin University Track and Field Club through an acquaintance's introduction. 2009: Achieved participation in the Hakone Ekiden for the first time in 33 years. 2015: Achieved Aoyama Gakuin University's first-ever overall victory in the Hakone Ekiden. 2017: In addition to a third consecutive Hakone Ekiden victory, achieved the Triple Crown in university ekiden by winning the Izumo Ekiden, All Japan University Ekiden, and Hakone Ekiden—the three major university ekiden races. 2018: Achieved a fourth consecutive Hakone Ekiden victory, becoming only the sixth school in history to do so. 2019: Became a professor in the Faculty of Global and Social Studies at Aoyama Gakuin University from April. 2026: Achieved a second consecutive three-peat victory for the same school, a first in history, with a new tournament record. Breaking with conventional wisdom in the track and field world, he is contributing to the development of Japanese collegiate long-distance running through innovative methods.
