Carlos Francisco Elías revealed that Rafael Herrera, the director of Listín Diario, who was recovering from a worsening of his health in 1994, told him that it was impossible to commit electoral fraud against José Francisco Peña Gómez. He described the PRD leader as “that young man who has been a point of equilibrium for the nation—and I am a witness to this—when the nation has been in crisis.” The cultural manager explained that he held long meetings and conversations with Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez, and that the latter always made a point of maintaining good relations and alliances with the leaders of the Dominican left. He was a person who developed and maintained extensive relationships with European social democracy, which provided him with experiences that he later brought back to the country. Cuchi Elías, as he is known, explained that he is not in favor of demonizing the Dominican left for its mistakes, because it is not so easy to analyze the positions of people who gave their lives for what they believed in out of context. He believed that few people on the left understood the need for intellectuals and cultural work, unlike Carlos Dore Cabral, Maximiliano Gómez (El Moreno), José Ramírez Conde, and Orlando Martínez. He also included Marcos Sánchez Rodríguez and Emma Tavarez Justo on that list. They were highly critical of the left's disconnection from people with critical and intellectual thought. In that regard, he explained that he doesn't understand how the UASD, a cultural heir to the April War, lacks the cultural activities that private universities, such as UNPHU, maintain.
