“Security is everybody’s business” | Global lessons on preparedness

On 25 March 2026, international experts and leaders joined Sally Bulkeley at ANU National Security College’s (NSC) 'Securing our Future: a ready and resilient Australia' to discuss global lessons on preparedness and resilience. Drawing on experiences from Singapore, Sweden, Finland, Japan and the United States, the panel explored how different countries build national resilience, strengthen community trust and prepare their societies for crisis. Speakers reflected on civil defence, public guidance, social cohesion, national unity, military preparedness and the importance of open conversations about risk. The discussion highlighted a central theme from NSC’s Community Consultations: preparedness must be made practical and meaningful for citizens – before crisis hits.
