Coming Out, First Love & Finding My Voice as a Filmmaker (with Rachel Leyco)

Growing up queer in a church that told you part of who you are is wrong can make it difficult to make sense of yourself. And sometimes, those experiences become the stories you spend your life trying to tell. Rachel Leyco is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, and actress based in Los Angeles whose work explores identity and belonging. She joins us at Sweet Spaghetti to talk about growing up in a non-denominational Christian church, coming out to herself and her family, and making sense of her sexuality. Rachel shares the story of falling in love with her best friend and the chances she didn’t take (all good now tho 👀). We talk about how she knew filmmaking and storytelling was the path she wanted to pursue, the rituals that ground her before stepping onto set, and why authentic representation behind and in front of the camera is so important.
