Jawn Henry Steam Turbine - Hauling Coal Over the Mountain [4K HDR]
My HO scale Norfolk and Western "Jawn Henry" steam turbine hauls a long coal train through the mountains of West Virginia on the North Shore Model Railway Club layout. The first brass locomotive I've done significant work to, it took over a year (of procrastination) to finish the drivetrain modifications, add weight, install DCC & sound, build a custom sound set, paint and decal. At more than 161 feet with its tender, the Jawn Henry was the longest steam locomotive ever built. The locomotive alone was over 111 feet long. A few details about the model: Maker: Alco Models Year made: 1982 Number made: 175 Weight: 75oz Decoder: Loksound 5L Speakers: 2x TCS 28mm 4w High Bass Sound Set: Custom Paint: Scalecoat I Finish: Alclad Light Sheen Decals: Custom A few details about the real locomotive: Maker: Baldwin Lima Hamilton, Babcock & Wilcox (Boiler), GE (Electronics) Year built: 1954 Year retired: 1958 Number made: 1 Class: TE Horsepower: 4500 Tractive effort: 144,000 Lbs (continuous @ 9mph) Boiler pressure: 600 psi Locomotive weight: 818,000 Lbs The Jawn was intended to prove that a coal powered locomotive could beat diesels and conventional steamers on fuel efficiency and in that regard it succeeded. Unfortunately it proved too complex and unreliable for large scale adoption. Perhaps if it had come along 10 years earlier there may have been time to refine it into a true competitor for diesel locomotives.
