Hoof Restoration: Trimming to Restore Concavity and Heel Depth

Welcome to my YouTube Channel, The Female Farrier, and thank you for watching this video! My name is Kristin Thornberry and I am a farrier/hoof care provider in Northwest Arkansas in the United States. I specialize in rehabbing horses through barefoot. I no longer shoe with steel but I do shoe with glue-on composites and facilitate the use of hoof boots and casting when necessary. I take a whole horse approach to hoof care and consider everything from the hoof up including, resting stance, overall posture, conformation, movement, nutrition and environment. I also make and sell a product called Healing Hoof Clay. The clay is an all-natural product that will kill fungus, yeast, and bacteria without harming live tissue. Most of the videos on this channel are of maintenance trims on horses that I have rehabbed or am in the process of rehabbing. I don’t have a lot of extreme hoof trimming videos because I don’t frequently take on new clients and my books have been mostly closed for the last few years. Due to the number of horses and owners that still need help but I have to turn away due to time and energy constraints, I am starting to shift my thoughts more towards educating owners and other hoof care providers. I hope that these videos can play a small role in helping horses receive the care they need. In these videos I will do my best to describe what I am doing and the why behind what I am doing. Sometimes I’m wrong and sometimes I’m right and the horses are usually my best teachers. In this video I am working on a Missouri Fox Trotter that one of my good friends recently purchased. He arrived in shoes that had been on for quite a long time and his hooves were overgrown. I wasn't sure what type of hooves he naturally had. After trimming him for a few cycles we have realized that his front hooves are relatively flat. he was very little concavity and we would like to see more depth of heel and thicker soft tissue in that area. Right now I am non the fence about putting him in shoes to try to make those changes. We decided to try to make some dietary changes first and see if that helps. If we don't see the positive changes we are hoping for I will probably put him in a glue-on composite shoe for a few cycles and see if that does the trick. If you have any comments or questions please leave them below and I will do my best to respond!
